Tadashi Kawamata

17-25 October 2002

Tadashi Kawamata has already executed interventions to houses and squares since 1986. Within the framework of the In Situ project (organized by Philip Peters and Flip Bool) he applied his first construction to a building due for demolition on Spui in The Hague. Since then he has travelled all over the world with his projects and has e.g. participated in the Documenta in Kassel, Germany.

He mostly uses old material for his work. The idea of circulation and recycling processes is at the centre of his work:

‘...I make temporary structures. I want to show the construction process. People are passing here every day, so that they are able to follow the process of construction and demolition. The work changes every day. My ideal public are the people living in the neighbourhood where I work. When the work is demolished, the project is finished. I only come round and cause a temporary change...’

(quotations from the catalogue of In Situ, by Philip Peters)
