Mobile Sewing Studio: 'Onherstelbaar verbeterd' ('Irreparably improved')
Artists: José den Hartog (Utrecht, 1967) en Lynn Buma (Voorburg, 1964)
Working period: 14 to 18 June 2003
Onherstelbaar verbeterd is the mobile sewing studio of the two artists José den Hertog and Lynn Buma. In their studio everyone can have their beloved but worn-out and unwearable trousers or sweater changed into something new. They use a varied supply of materials: from textiles and rubber to plastic, leather, metal, wood, paper, glass and chocolate. Painted, printed and stripped of its parts, the garment becomes detached from its original appearance and acquires new meaning. After a while the owner can retrieve their irreparably improved garment and see whether it is still wearable or will lead an independent life as a work of art.
In collaboration with: Residents from Transvaal, and the neighbourhood service centre Transvaal.
Photo studio on location: Yvonne van den Broek
Location: Schalkburgerplein (current neighbourhoodpark) during the Blockparty, afterwards in an abandoned residence on the Wesselsstraat 64.
Closing party: in the tea garden with residents, artists and other guests.
