Façade project by Michiel Voet (Amsterdam, 1964) and Jeroen Bisscheroux (Heerlen, 1963)

period: July 20, 2005 through April 15, 2006

location: office OpTrek, 478 De la Reyweg

The façade project Jack, external unit was designed and realized by Michiel Voet and Jeroen Bisscheroux. Jack - after the so-called guitar plug - was a multifunctional working unit. It was designed in the shape of a bright red show-box, a 'parasitical extension'. On the inside there was space for a study, while on the exterior a projection screen was incorporated as a conspicuous means of communication for OpTrek. Jack was attached to the wall like a plug. The hi-tech character of the unit contrasted sharply with the architecture of the façade, which dated from the beginning of the last century. The Rotterdam video artists Klaas van Gorkum and Iratxe Jaio realized the video programme On TV for this extension, of which the central theme consisted of social issues. The public could follow this programme from the street. During the opening, residents were given the opportunity to make their own live programme from the studio. The broadcast proved infectious, children rapped spontaneously in the studio and a neighbour made use of the opportunity to let it be known that he disagreed with the city's demolition plans.
